Movie Theatres

Popcorn. Nachos. Drinks. Candy. Movie theatres have long been a part of our lives. Not only do we think of sitting on rows of chairs facing a gigantic screen, we think of munching on snacks while our eyes are riveted to the moving images and of going through the whole experience of anticipation and emotion. We watch the commercials and trailers, await the opening sequences and then leave our seats after the credits with much to say and think about.

Movie theatres have come a long way from their beginnings as black-and-white films being shown to people seated in converted “theatre” halls. From the small, one-screen cinemas, they have evolved into multi-million dollar businesses across the world. The advent of multiple screens brought about cinema multiplexes, wherein more than two cinemas are brought together in one building to show different films. The really big cinema chains have complexes running over twenty films at a time. Recent developments in movie-making have made an impact in the movie theatre business, such as the use of digital media in film. This has led to the creation of the IMAX theatre and of 3D movies, bringing a whole new kind of experience to movie watching.

The more opulent cinemas in major cities have upgraded movie theatres to further enhance the comfort and fun that movies give an audience. There are theatre chairs that recline, armrests that move, refillable snacks and drinks and other kinds of services right at a person's fingertips. No matter what kind of cinema is involved though, movie theatres have always been and still continue to be both a form of entertainment and a place for people to commune in.
